Violence erupts in northern India after two killed in accident

Violence erupted in India's northern Gurdaspur district as an angry mob torched vehicles and liquor vends after two persons were run over by a jeep belonging to a liquor contractor

The accident took place around midnight when two persons identified as Sanjiv Kumar and Subegh Singh were travelling on a scooter and were hit from behind by a SUV killing them on the spot.

Furious protesters took to the streets, set two vehicles and threeliquor vends on fire, dealing a lot of damage to the contractor’s property.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Batala, Upinderjit Singh said, a case was registered and a search operation was launched to nab the accused.

Further investigations are underway.
