Berlin mosque hit by suspected arson attack

A mosque and Turkish cultural club in the German capital of Berlin was set ablaze by a suspected arson attack shortly after 2 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Sunday morning

The police and fire brigade were called to the scene by residents, who had witnessed three teenagers running away from the site of the attack.

Burkhard Dregger, member of the Berlin city parliament, condemned the attack, which left the premises completely burnt out. He said the Turkish community and mosque, which is part of the Ditib association, a Turkish-Islamic union for religious affairs, was well integrated in Berlin’s district of Reinickendorf, where the attack took place.

Dregger called for a joint effort of the German-Turkish community to help reconstruct the mosque, which is situated on the ground floor of an apartment building. Police said German state security is investigating.
