Indian mother, on mission to complete education, studying in same class as son

A 44-year-old mother of three is back in a classroom and taking classes with her son as she tries to complete her education, 28 years after dropping out of school due to family issues.

Rajani Bala had to leave her education prior to appearing for class X board exam due to family constraints in 1990. She, then, got married to Rajkumar Sathi, an employee at a private firm who himself completed graduation after a 17-year sabbatical in 2004.

Bala, who is a ward attendant at a local hospital, needed her class X graduation certificate for professional purposes and thus decided to enroll at the Punjab state open school last year and after rigorous preparations she along with her son Deepak Sathi will appear for the examination together this year.

Deepak, Bala’s only son and the youngest child, said he along with his mother study together at home.

India has made great strides in education, a United Nations report said in 2015 by reducing the number of children not attending school by more than 90 percent and getting all children into primary schools. But despite success in enrolling girls, many drop out of school.
