U.S. diplomatic staff load truck outside St Petersburg consulate

U.S. diplomatic staff continued to move items out from their consulate building in St Petersburg on Saturday (March 31) after Moscow ordered its closure and the expulsion of 60 U.S. diplomats on Thursday (March 29)

At noon (0900gmt) men could be seen carrying bags and boxes out of the building and loading them into a waiting truck.

On Friday (March 30), Russia expelled a further 59 diplomats from 23 countries saying it was responding to what it called baseless demands for scores of its own diplomats to leave a slew of mostly Western countries that have joined London and Washington in censuring Moscow over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in England.

The White House said Moscow’s decision marked a further deterioration in the U.S.-Russia relationship.
