St. Patrick’s Day celebrations underway in several cities in the USA

The annual tradition, that is more than 50 years old, of dying the river draws hundreds of thousands of spectators to downtown Chicago.

In Savannah, Georgia, one of the country’s largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the United States Vice President and his family attended the parade, waving to crowds from a balcony at the Town Hall as the colorful parade made its way across downtown.

Bagpipes and drums provided the music for one of the oldest traditions in the nation, the St. Patrick’s Day parade of New York. Parade watchers provided the cheers and the costumes. Green hats and beads adorned parade watchers young and old who also waved Irish flags.

Organizers say about 150,000 people participate in the annual parade and march up Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue past St. Patrick’s Cathedral and about two million people turn out to watch.

The first New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1762.

The parades honor St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland.
