Singer Shawn Mendes turns 21

The pop-star rose to fame as a teenager and grew a devoted fanbase by posting videos on the social media app Vine.

Mendes released his debut record “Handwritten” at the age of 16 and went on to sell 106,000 albums, 103,000 songs and 4.8 million streams, tallying a total of 119,000 units in April 2015.

Billboard said Mendes was the youngest artist to notch No. 1 on the album chart since another social media star-turned-singer, Justin Bieber, topped the chart in 2010 at age 16.

At just 21, Mendes has won 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, received two Grammy nominations and was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time in 2018.
