U.S. President Donald Trump, on Saturday (May 9) sent a message of support to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) league about wanting to resume sporting events amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has claimed the lives of thousands in the United States.
“We love it, we think it’s important, get the sports leagues back, let’s play — you do the social distancing and whatever else you have to do — but we need sports,” Trump said in a taped message to the UFC.
The life-long New Yorker also has a long relationship with UFC President Dana White. Trump hosted UFC events at his since-bankrupt Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City decades ago when the sport was spurned by most venues, White has said in previous interviews.
There have been some 1.32 million cases of the coronavirus recorded in the United States, with some 78,000 deaths, while overall there have been more than four million reported infections and nearly 277,000 deaths around the world, according to a Reuters tally as of early Sunday.
